Joirnalist Ignatius Annor Says He’s Gay
Ghanaian journalist Ignatius Annor, who introduced himself as a homosexual on Monday after years of denial, expressed his gratitude to Ghanaians for the love shown to him after the opening.
The journalist who currently works for Euro News shared on his Instagram page that February 22, 2021 will remain a feast day for him every year that God has given him life.
“On February 22, 2021, I openly came forward as a black gay TV reporter. I wrote the date in my journal and it will be a feast day every year that God gives me life. Most of all, I am inspired by the outpouring of love, kindness and support that reached me from Ghana and around the world. It is reminiscent of the religion I live in that “whatever you post will always come back to you”. Newton called it the third law of motion. It’s love on steroids. I heard stories of my people still in the closet, they shared their pain and fears in a deeply religious country still determined to dehumanize sexual minority groups in Africa. This is nothing new to me. I know this because it was a lived experience from Ghana and Congo where I worked for almost three years. It is also not lost on me that others have chosen to spread hatred and attack my personality. I don’t mind at all because they don’t know me. He posted.
He added that he hopes the LGBTQI + community will soon be accepted and treated with kindness.
“My hope and prayer is that there will come a time when the LGBTQI + community everywhere will be treated with nothing less than respect, kindness and basic human dignity. It is up to each of us to continue to be the light and lead the way for oppressed minorities within our families, communities, nations and the world at large. As I write my thank you note, I remember those who came before us. People who looked like me or who were just as gay as me, I am and always will be. Of their sacrifices and their fight for a just and egalitarian society. I always hope for a better tomorrow. For my Queer community, just know that I see you, I am with you and I am you. Here is what I know for sure, love always wins. Thanks! ”He added.
Ignatius Annor, in an interview, revealed that he denied being gay for fear of losing his career as a journalist.
Admitting that the issue of homosexuality is very controversial, Annor said, some people who have seen him through the prism of his homosexuality and his subsequent denial may see his admission as contradictory.
He explained on PM Express on Joy News that “in the past, I denied that I was gay. I did it for fear of losing my career.
“At the time, I was practicing broadcast journalism in Ghana for a number of years and being on TV and being ousted hurt me a lot.”
Annor admitted that throughout his denial he let his community down just because he didn’t have the courage to recognize the truth and live it out, so he apologized for it.
