• The TUC has stated that it does not support the recommendation of emoluments paid to the spouses of the President and Vice-President.

• The union said the decision had no legal basis to be enforceable

• He therefore urged the President to ensure that all payments already made are refunded.

The Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) advised President Akufo-Addo to immediately reimburse all emoluments paid to his wife and that of the Vice-President.

The appeal follows recommendations received by the parliamentary emoluments committee to pay salaries to the wives of the president and his vice-president.

But a TUC statement seen by GhanaWeb pointed out that it cannot support the decision as it has no legal basis to apply as the president’s wives are only eligible for salaries once they are married. seen entrusting official functions of the State.

“It is just not fair that anyone who has not been formally assigned to duties and responsibilities in the public service are paid a monthly salary. The Committee probably sought to regularize the payment of allowances which had already been paid. But you cannot regularize the payment of allowances which have no legal basis ”, indicates in part the press release.

“The ongoing heated debate makes it clear that this issue is very important to Ghanaians. We would like to advise President Akufo-Addo to use all the powers given to him by the Constitution of Ghana, first of all, to stop the payment of salaries to his wife and the wife of the Vice President immediately, until ” that they are officially assigned to functions and responsibilities. The president should also ensure that all these payments made to his wife and the vice president’s wife are refunded immediately, ”the union stressed.

He continued, “When the time is right for the wives of presidents and vice presidents to be given official duties and responsibilities that will enable them to receive salaries from taxpayers’ money, the executive branch of government should remember the wives of Speakers of Parliament (the heads of the legislative branch of government) and the wives of chief justices (the heads of the judicial branch of government). They can also perform certain official functions, ”the union explained.
