What was supposed to be a cyst was actually an untrained twin.
In South America, a baby is born with her own twin growing up in her.
The child, welcomed by a Colombian mother, was born in February this year with her twin partially formed in her abdomen.
The untrained twin still grew after the birth of the little girl.
The New York Times reports that the phenomenon, known as "fetus in fetu", is extremely rare but not totally absent from the medical world.
Fetus in fetu was documented for the first time in a British medical journal in 1808. It has since been recorded in births in India, Singapore and Indonesia.
It is thought that this disease affects about half a million live births worldwide.
It was first thought that the little girl in Colombia, named Itzamara, had a small cyst growing in her liver. However, doctors quickly realized that she was actually an untrained twin.
The twin, which was surgically removed from the baby's abdomen Itzamara, had no heart or brain. He had his own separate umbilical cord that was drawing sustenance from the baby's intestine.
Once removed from the body of Itzamara, he had a partially formed head and limbs and was about two inches in length.
Itzamara was delivered by caesarean section. The doctors said that she was "a normal baby now".
