A 14-member Savannah Regional Lands Commission committee chaired by Dr Adams Sulemana Achanso, University of Development Studies (UDS), was inaugurated by Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Samuel Abu Jinapor.
The Committee was inaugurated in Damongo and its composition is provided for by the 1992 Constitution. It is made up of representatives of selected professional groups, traditional leaders and local authorities from the seven districts of the region.
Land and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor, in his inaugural address, said that no development actor can underestimate the vital role land plays in the whole of the world. human organization, and the government has identified and attached great importance to its good management.
He said that a very important natural resource like land is a catalyst for the socio-economic development of every nation, if given due attention.
“But if it is not well managed, it can lead to conflict and disaster. It is for this reason that the Constitution established the Land Commission and the Regional Land Commissions to ensure the efficient management and use of land in our country ”, noted the Minister.
Being the largest region in Ghana in terms of land area, “we have a great opportunity to harness this resource to accelerate the socio-economic development of the region.
However, the way we operate depends largely on the Regional Commission, mandated by Article 260 (1) of our National Constitution, to exercise the functions of Land Commission in this region ”, explained Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor.
According to him, “the diversity of competences which the Constitution requires to constitute the composition of the Regional Commissions is a clear indication of the importance which the drafters of the Constitution attach to the administration and the management of land”.
“The 2020 Land Law (Law 1036) paved the way for us to implement effective land administration and management. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Land Commission have started an awareness and awareness campaign on this new law to ensure that all stakeholders understand and appreciate the requirements of the law, ”he said. .
He said available documents from the Northern Region Lands Commission revealed that before the creation of the Savannah region, very few people in the region registered their lands with the Commission.
Mr. Jinapor added, “I hope the Regional Land Commission will lead education on land law in this region, to ensure, among other things, that deeds are registered according to the law.”
On digitization, Land Commission Executive Secretary Alhaji Sulemana Mahama said that as a new region, the Commission should start on a good note without all the challenges of administration in other regions.
“For this reason, you will start on a digital basis. We will start by migrating the digital recordings ”.
Alhaji Sulemana Mahama on opening up development in the regional capital and the region as a whole, said: “Damongo is a regional capital. We will want it to grow up and be a different Damongo than what we would consider a traditional capital.
