England succumbed to a 10-wicket loss to India within two days of an astonishing third test in Ahmedabad.
On a barely believable day when both sides collapsed and 17 wickets fell in two sessions, India claimed the fastest test victory since 1935 shortly after dinner.
England started the day with an exciting retaliation, turning India’s 99-3 overnight into a 145 all.
But, facing a deficit of 33 first innings, England were eliminated for 81 as the Indian spinners revolted again.
In a frenetic start to their heats, England lost Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow in three balls – both played by Axar Patel.
Ben Stokes and Joe Root briefly calmed the boisterous atmosphere, but their back-to-back layoffs sparked a sad procession towards England’s lowest test total in India.
The spinners were responsible for the downfall of every wicket on the day – and 28 of 30 in the match – Joe Root taking 5-8 in the morning session, Axar 5-32 and Ravichandran Ashwin 4-48, including his 400th test of the scalp.
India hit their goal of 49 in eight rounds, an incredible game over before the bright conditions of a day-night test could make an impact.
The victory gave India, who lost the first test, an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series with one game remaining.
England demoralized by an incredible day
While the first of this test was remarkable – England shot 112 despite the draw – the second was one of the most incredible in recent memory.
Neither team tackled a corner, at least not before India chase after England were demoralized after their second weak collapse of the game.
All 17 wickets fell in 53 overs for the loss of 127 points, the game ended with almost 30 overs remaining on day two.
The fact that Root, a part-time spinner, claimed that such extraordinary numbers showed the difficulties drummers face. The spinners found an extravagant trick but the wickets often fell to slippery deliveries.
Although England’s retaliation brought them back into the fight, Axar and Ashwin’s relentless skill and precision proved too important for a team that also collapsed twice in the second Test loss. .
If England had collected another 100 points, India would have had a tough race.
Instead, under little pressure, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma galloped to victory in one day mode to the delight of the crowds in the world’s largest cricket stadium.
