An Indonesian court commuted the death sentence pbaded on a Frenchman convicted of drug trafficking. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern at his conviction, reiterating France's opposition to the death penalty.
The Mataram High Court commuted the sentence imposed on Felix Dorfin in 19 years in prison, three months after his death sentence following his arrest at the Lombok airport, a holiday island near Bali, for carrying a suitcase containing about three kilos of drugs, including ecstasy and amphetamines.
Dorfin baderted that he did not know the exact contents of what was in the suitcase. His lawyer has already described him as a victim.
Prosecutors had initially sought a 20-year prison sentence and the death penalty was a shock for the ruling made earlier this year.
The reason the court commuted the sentence was not immediately understood. The decision should be made public Friday. The prosecutor stated that he was in the process of deciding whether to appeal the decision or not.
