The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it was too late for a candidate to withdraw from any candidacy for a position in the upcoming elections.
INEC said that in reaction to the resignation of Oby Ezekwesili as the presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN).
Ezekwesili announced Thursday its withdrawal, saying it wanted to give way to a coalition against the candidates of the Popular Democratic Party (PDP) and the Progressive Congress (APC).
Reacting via a statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary of the INEC president, said that November 17 was the deadline for withdrawal.
"It is impossible for a presidential candidate to withdraw from the race now. According to the calendar and schedule of activities for the general elections of 2019, the last day for the withdrawal of candidates or the replacement of candidates withdrawn by political parties was November 17, 2018 for the presidential elections and the National Assembly .
"The deadline for the withdrawal or replacement of Ezekwesili or any candidate in this category has pbaded," reads the statement.
