According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, an influenza epidemic is spreading throughout the country. He estimates that more than 1.6 million people have been affected.
The ministry announced that about 190,000 people had been treated for flu symptoms in about 5,000 medical facilities during the past week until last Sunday.
That's 110,000 more than the previous week.
This figure represents 38.5 patients per institution on average. The total number of flu patients reportedly exceeded 1.63 million, or more than one million in one week.
The ministry said the epidemic was worsening in most prefectures in Japan, and warned that more people would fall ill in the coming weeks.
It indicates that the H1N1 subtype is responsible for 70% of cases. This is the same strain that caused a global pandemic ten years ago.
Officials urge people, especially children and the elderly, to take preventive measures, such as washing their hands and wearing a mask.
