TOKYO (Kyodo) – Japan is facing another winter flu crisis with a record high of 57.09 patients diagnosed last week by medical institutions performing influenza tests, the health ministry said Friday.

It is estimated that about 2.23 million people were diagnosed with influenza during the reporting period, an increase of about 100,000 from the previous week, he added.

Of the patients, 3,205 were hospitalized, including 628 in serious condition. Both numbers were higher than the peaks of last winter of 2,050 and 379, respectively.

The total number of patients this season is estimated at about 7.64 million. The most commonly detected viruses were the 2009 pandemic influenza A strain and the Hong Kong type A strain, the ministry said.

The data is based on reports from some 5,000 designated medical institutions across the country.
