[Infographic] AFCON 2019 Budget Ghana: Joy Sports: 10 unanswered key questions for the Ministry of Sports

After the budget announcement of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, there seems to be more questions than answers.

Sports Minister Isaac Kwame Asiamah told the European Parliament on Wednesday his budget of $ 6.3 million, but $ 4.5 million. As a result, $ 1.7 million was not spent. The Black Stars have only played four games in Egypt after leaving the competition in the round of 16.

However, the Joy Sports office – based on the general public's comments and anecdotal information – believes that the minister's presentation was not exhaustive. As a result, the office poses a series of complementary questions on the financial situation of the country for CAN.

Among the many concerns of the general public, these ten (10) were put forward:

AFCON Budget 2019

1. CAF meets the needs of the players and the technical team of each team during the tournament. How many members of the technical team does the Ghana team have present?

2. In 2017, the Black Stars were convinced to receive a $ 5,000 bonus. Why can not we do the same thing this time?

3. CAF donated $ 260,000 to each participating country for preparation. Why was this amount not included in the minister's presentation?

4. Ghana won only one match but paid out bonuses of over $ 965,000 to the players. Does this mean that each player has received approximately $ 42,000?

5. Ghana's culture is to pay the Black Stars' rights of appearance before tournaments. Has this happened again? If yes how much?

6. In his presentation, the Minister stated that the budget of $ 6.3 million covered NINE categories of people, but that the specific breakdown referred to the expenses incurred solely for the players and the technical team. What happened to the expenses of the other seven groups?

7. The overall budget of the Ministry of Sports for 2019 is 43 million GHS ($ 7.9 million), but the budget of the CAN only was 34 or 6.3 million GHS (or 79 % of the total amount). How does the state justify this expense while many other sports are in urgent need of help?

8. Does Joy Sports understand that CAN's expenses were taken outside of the Ministry of Sports budget allocation? What was the source of the money?

9. Budgets, by definition, are presented before expenditures are incurred. Why did Parliament not ask that this be done by the Ministry of Sports before CAN?

10. Who constitutes the "additional technical staff" in the Minister's budget and why are their daily bonus / winner payments separate from "technical staff"?

The Joy Sports team is of the opinion that the answers to these questions are essential for the future of Ghana's participation in subsequent sports tournaments – not just football.
