Scientists say that inhaling sugar can help fight lung infections.
Scientists at the University of Manchester have made this discovery by studying white blood cells called macrophages, which remove the harmful organisms from the immune system.
The scientists said that macrophages in the lungs needed adequate glucose levels to function properly. Stimulating cells with more sugar could help the immune system fight off bronchial infections that cause coughs and pneumonia, according to research findings documented in Nature Immunology.
