A Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Daniel Nii Kwartey Titus Glover, noted that commercial vehicle pbadengers involved in road accidents do not make claims for injuries or expenses incurred as a result of these accidents.

This is despite the fact that the Motor Vehicle Act (1958) obliges all motor insurance companies to cover the financial liability of third parties injured by accidents involving insured persons, the Deputy Minister said in Accra. .

"When people are injured in an accident and survive, they thank God and move on," he said at the second edition of the Ghana Insurance Awards on July 26.

This, he said, must be stopped.

He added that even though the law existed, not all pbadengers knew that they were entitled to compensation in the event of a problem.

As a result, he advised pbadengers to always charge for accidents.

He also advised insurance companies to honor such claims to help take charge of pbadengers, as well as to enhance the public image of the industry.

Ministry to act

To help reverse the situation, Titus-Glover said the ministry would soon be requiring all long-haul drivers to keep the name and address of all pbadengers on board.

This, he said, would allow the department to lobby for all claims entitled to pbadengers in the event of an accident.

He also noted that the country's insurance companies offered little public information about third-party claims and urged them to do more, as this would help to give insurance a positive image.

Auto Insurance Policy

Mr. Titus-Glover's advice comes at a time when road accidents are a major public safety issue.

Data from the Ghana Traffic Police Traffic and Traffic Department (MTTD) indicates that 1,252 people lost their lives as a result of a traffic accident during the first half of 2019.

Of these, 540 were killed in commercial vehicle crashes, while 3,788 were injured to varying degrees.

It is not clear, however, how many of these people claimed compensation for them.

In general, automobile insurance policies cover the financial responsibilities of occupants in the event of the insured vehicle being involved in a traffic accident and damage to third parties or property.
