Leigh Whannell (Insidious, The Mule, Upgrade) signed to write the script for the remake of John CarpenterThe clbadic film of the 80s Escape from New York. According to THR, he could also end up directing.
This new version of Escape from New York is said to have a "new vision" and "will retain elements of the original but will bring new ideas to the table. One of Whannell's goals is to avoid the inflated tentpole remake pathway that has plagued the restarts of other 1980s movies such as Robocop and Total reminder. "
At least he knows what not to do to redo the movie! Personally, I do not think Escape from New York must be redone at all. But, if it had to be redone anyway, they could just as well do it in a way that would satisfy the fans as well as a new generation of audiences.
The original film was shot in a futuristic 1997. Kurt Russell interpreted in the film by Snake Plissken, former Special Forces agent and cons. who is drafted to rescue the President of the United States after the crash of Air Force One in New York, turned into a maximum security prison. Plissken has 22 hours to free the president and a tape he carries that contains the key to peace. If he does not succeed, he will explode.
Whannell also recently signed to write and direct The invisible man for Universal.
What do you think of Escape From New York to get the remake treatment?
