In just four months, Instagram has already pooled a base of users of over two million daguerre-hipsters, who are now tasked with uploading up to 300,000 photos per day. It's a success from every point of view, so it's not surprising that Instagram is looking to maintain momentum by developing in an interesting way.
In a blog post, Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram explains how the company intends to grow: by opening the site to other developers and allowing them to integrate with the Instagram ecosystem through a new API.
Stating that the guiding principle for Instagram is to "create and maintain an open ecosystem that changes our worldview," the new API should allow other developers to send photos to Instagram via their own apps. Interested developers can sign up here.
Instagram's intentions seem to be spreading on a gigantic mobile photo sharing site, like Flickr, but only for mobile devices. It's a great vision. I wish them good luck.
