Interior Health asks anyone sick or uncomfortable to stay away from long term care facilities until they feel better.
Although similar calls are being launched each year at this time of year, this notice has become all the more urgent as a number of outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases (GI ) have recently spread through the Royal Inland Hospital of Kamloops and other health care facilities in this city.
According to IH, 31 patients and 26 staff members reported symptoms since 23 January.
Although seven of the ten current locations in southern IH where outbreaks were reported are in Kamloops – five at RIH, two in long-term care facilities in that city and one at Hillside Psychiatric Center – outbreaks were also reported in the long term. care facilities in Kelowna, Vernon, Castlegar and Osoyoos.
The Kelowna outbreak was declared on January 21 at Mission Creek Landing, formerly known as Sutherland Hills.

All epidemics, except for Castlegar, involve gastrointestinal diseases. The Castlegar epidemic concerns respiratory diseases.
IH officials said anyone who does not feel well should stay at home because the spread of germs could be very dangerous for someone whose immune system is compromised. Such diseases, although uncomfortable for healthy people, are generally not considered dangerous.
Health authorities also remind the public to wash their hands regularly to help stop the spread of germs.
