"That Was Yesterday" is the latest Bridges sync for the HBO show, after its "River" has become a highlight of Season 1.

Billboard: How much in the process did the show ask you to contribute to the song for Season 2?
Bridges: I would say that all this happened around May. This is a jam that I wrote at the end of Go home, and it was basically just me playing to try to find the sound I wanted.
What prompted you to choose this song?
I felt like this song was similar to "River", which was the first song they chose for [season 1]. There is just a very clean atmosphere – and the same thing with "River" – so I felt this song would be perfect for that.
How did having "River" in the first season help the song?
It helped me a lot. That put me on a whole new fan base. We were at the end of the cycle of my album, and this one was put back in the R & B charts and all the rest. I'm always grateful for the timing of this song.
And that was written almost four years ago, right?
Totally. It's really interesting, the way my tone is in my voice. It's a reflection of my situation in 2016 and comparing that to the way I sing is totally different. My voice was a lot rougher because of my tours and my drink was pretty strong[[[[Laughs]and now I'm singing a little bit more gently. But yes, he's an old man. A goodie.
What were some of the emotions you experienced during this period?
The weight of everything – of all the successes – forced to write this song. It's all about thinking about where I come from, but also about preserving my identity while navigating the music industry and experiencing success.
Do you have a favorite Big little lies character?
It is a link between Madeline [Reese Witherspoon] and Bonnie [Zoe Kravitz].
Would you ever make an appearance in the series if the opportunity arose?
Oh, definitely. I dive a little and I tried to act a little, and I would love to make an appearance.
What's next?
I have some stuff in the pot that I cooked. I'm doing this side project with this group called Khruangbin in Houston, and I'm really excited about it. I was able to create new things, but also import old songs that would never see the light, so I'm very excited about it.
