Senyo Hosi, member of OneGhana movement
Senyo Hosi, a member of a social action group, the OneGhana Movement, said that investing in the quality of a member of parliament would be more prudent than investing in a new complex of parliamentary chambers.
On the theme "The Big Issue", Mr. Hosi, also president of Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution, reminded Ghanaians of some of the staffing and logistical problems faced by lawmakers.
"You have parliamentarians and in their own constituency they do not have an official office with staff who can provide them with quality service and support."
"Their capacity is weak. How long will he sit down to effectively pursue the mandate that has been given? It's no wonder some things are happening quickly [in Parliament]Said Hosi.
It is for these reasons that he advised the legislature to "invest in the good things that matter and those that can increase the efficiency of their activities. [MPs’] mandate."
Plans for a new complex sparked protests and criticism from observers.
The Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), one of the critics of these plans, made similar comments and urged Parliament to focus on strengthening its credibility.
CSD said that "what is missing in Parliament, but which must make it a credible element of a constitutionality control system, and a true political partner of the executive power are not fanciful".
"What Parliament needs to occupy its proper place in our system of government is the proper institutional powers, prerogatives and autonomous rules that would allow MPs to adopt legislative solutions to public problems and to exercise significant control over the executive and the public administration ".
