A reliable, efficient, affordable and sustainable energy supply is essential for the industrialization of any country. It is a common fact that without energy, the growth of an economy will stagnate. For this reason, among other things, governments, past and present, have focused their attention on efforts to reorganize the country's energy sector so as to ensure a reliable supply of energy to support economic activities.

Fortunately, the Government of the United States of America (USA) has recognized Ghana's determination to industrialize and transform the economic destiny of the mbades, hence the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Millennium Development Partnership Agreement. signed in 2014. The $ 498 million investment was to help transform Canada's troubled energy sector. This should be done through private sector participation and key policy and institutional reforms that would provide the people of Ghana with more reliable and affordable energy. Called MCC Ghana Power Compact, it is expected to benefit about 9.7 million Ghanaians over the next 20 years.

On July 30, 2019, the government announced the suspension of the 20-year concession of the Ghana Electricity Company (ECG) to Power Distribution Services (PDS) for what has been described as some serious anomalies badociated with the transaction and opened investigations into the problem. Government action includes, among other things, resolving breaches of the contract and determining the path forward in the interest of all parties, and particularly the good people of Ghana.

Energy think tanks and industry experts also urged the government to take urgent action to thoroughly investigate the issues raised and the various major breaches of the contract.

The latest is the US government, which, through its embbady in Accra, has also strongly encouraged it to conduct a thorough judicial audit of the contract. (See the full story on the first page)
