United People’s Party (UPP) National Chairman Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah called on President Akufo Addoled’s administration to create a conducive agricultural environment for young people to help tackle the current unemployment rate in the country.
According to him, the government should invest fully in agriculture in order to make the sector attractive to young people.
“The current unemployment problem in Ghana is quite worrying, and it is due to the way our politicians run the country.
“The use of grants and loans by our previous presidents to administer the country since 1992 has led to the present situation of the country.
“Our current debt stands at over $ 300 billion. We borrowed and borrowed, but nothing came of it. I have to admit that becoming president of Ghana is now the cheapest thing I have ever done. “, he explained.
He stressed that no government borrows to endanger the lives of future generations but to create jobs for them.
“I believe our leaders just went to school to learn how to borrow money.” In Ghana, anyone who wants to live comfortably has to get into agribusiness because it is the only industry where you can afford after working.
“The way we practice agriculture is not attractive to young people because there is no market after the harvest, much more than a solid road network connecting the farm to the market,” he said. lamented.
Mr Asamoah, on the other hand, has advised the government to set up retail stores across the country and assure farmers that their produce will be frequented after harvest.
Emphasizing that it is the role of every government to create jobs for the people, he however applauded the government for introducing the 1D1F and Planter for Food and Jobs initiative, saying it is were sound policies that require a second review of their implementation.
“You will visit villages and see cassava, yams, plantains and other crops that have been ruined. There is no car to bring the products to the capital.
“This is where I will stress the need for the government to invest more resources to face the difficulties of the sector and make it more attractive to citizens, which will make citizens happy and the government will be happy”, he stressed.
He explained that the majority of the population is in the private sector, so the interest rate should be reduced.
He therefore called on young people to join the UPP to oust the NDC and NPP from power because there is nothing better they could offer Ghanaians.
