Englishman Ben Stokes was hit six times in the last ball while the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Rajasthan Royals by four wickets in the Indian Premier League.

Chaseing 152, the Super Kings needed 18 points in the final in Jaipur.

But Ravindra Jadeja hit the first ball for six and Mitchell Santner brought the last delivery over Stokes' header.

The Super Kings captain, MS Dhoni, went on the field earlier in the game to argue with the referees after Stokes' "no-ball" rollover.

Dhoni was fined 50% of his match fees for violating the IPL Code of Conduct.

Chennai was fighting around the clock in response to 151-7 in Rajasthan.

Ambati Rayudu made 57 balls out of 47 balls and the goaltender in India, Dhoni, scored 58 before 43 before being stopped by Stokes on the third ball of the last day.

The next delivery was a draw at Santner who looked above the waist.

Although referee Ulhas Gandhe signaled a ban, the decision was overturned by square-footed referee Bruce Oxenford, and an angry Dhoni returned to the field to make a comeback.

The off-roader Stokes also conceded a no-ball forefoot before going wide with the Super Kings needing four of the last ball.

His next delivery was in the slot and Santner, the versatile New Zealand coach, insisted on getting a spectacular win: Dhoni's 100th win as captain.

Stokes has been hit four times in the final of the 2016 World Twenty20 West defeat by the West Indies.

He caught Jofra Archer's Kedar Jadhav over his head at the back of the match and scored 28 goals out of 26 out of the 151 balls of the Royals.
