Activities were brought to a standstill in the courts of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state, on Tuesday, as the Nigeria Judicial Staff Union JUSUN joined counterparts across the country in an indefinite strike.
The question of the financial autonomy of the judiciary is the bone of contention, according to the state president of the union, Comrade Ibrahim Sambo, who spoke with DAILY POST at the premises of the State High Court while upholding the law.
He said the nationwide strike was due to “the failure of state governors to implement Decree 10 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari granting financial autonomy to the judicial branch of government.”
Sambo lamented that unlike what exists in the executive and legislative branches of government when it comes to financial autonomy, the judiciary does not enjoy the same autonomy.
He hopes that Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State will comply with the president’s directive to ensure the financial autonomy of the judiciary.
When the DAILY POST correspondent visited the premises of the Ilorin District Court at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, the doors were locked.
Litigants, lawyers and police were seen outside the courthouse in groups discussing the issue at hand.
Those most affected were those whose bail issues were expected to be resolved and addressed.
Responding to this development, a legal expert, lawyer Afolabi Gambari, described the union strike as a waste of time and a misplaced priority.
According to him, “There can be no good result of the strike, no coordination, no consensus, they will be invited and pocketed.”
He said there had been similar union strikes in the past that had never yielded positive results, adding that “whoever pays the player dictates the tune”.
A strike notice dated April 5, 2021, pasted on the walls of the court premises, read: “In accordance with national guidelines regarding our financial autonomy, I hereby order all judicial personnel in Kwara State to stand up and take action. comply with the directive that all courts must cease operations on April 6, 2021 ”.
“All staff are advised to stay at home until further instructions,” said the notice jointly signed by the President of the State, Comrade Ibrahim Sambo and Deputy Secretary of State, Ahmed. Mr. Taofik.
