Stena Impero was seized by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard on Friday in a key Gulf waterway.
The tanker was surrounded by four ships and a helicopter before heading into Iranian waters, Hunt said.
"We are not looking for military options," he said. "We are looking for a diplomatic way to solve this situation."
A senior Iranian diplomat was summoned to the Foreign Office in London after the seizure of the ship.
Hunt confirmed that he met on Saturday afternoon with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
He said that he was "extremely disappointed to have badured me last Saturday that Iran wanted to defuse the situation that they behaved in the opposite way."
He also tweeted: "The action yesterday in the Gulf shows worrying signs that Iran could choose a dangerous path of illegal and destabilizing behavior after Gibraltar's legal oil detention to Syria."
