Iran seizes a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said its forces had captured a British tanker in the Strait of Hormuz for allegedly breaking international laws, as tension mounted in the Gulf.

The oil tanker Stena Impero "was confiscated by the Revolutionary Guards at the request of Hormozgan port and sea organization during its pbadage in the Strait of Hormuz, for non-compliance with the rules international shipping, "announced IRGC's official website, Sepahnews.

The tanker "was driven to the shore and handed over to the organization for it to go through the necessary legal procedures and investigations," he said.
The vessel was seized by "small boats and a helicopter" at 7:30 pm local time (15:00 GMT), shipowner Stena Bulk and Northern Marine Management said, adding that they were "currently unable to contact the ship."

The Marine Traffic tanker tracking service showed that Stena Impero, a Swedish company under the British flag, had last reported its location near Larak Island in the highly sensitive waterway at 21.00 local time. (16.30 GMT).

There are 23 crew members on board, the company's press release added.

"We are seeking more and more information and badessing the situation as a result of an incident in the Gulf," said a spokesman for the UK Department of Defense.
