DUBLIN (Reuters) – Ireland on Friday confirmed the presence of a new variant of the highly contagious coronavirus whose presence in the United Kingdom has led to travel bans in a number of countries.

“I can confirm that we have detected the new UK variant of SARS-CoV-2 by whole genome sequencing at the National Virus Reference Laboratory” at University College Dublin, Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said in a statement.

“Further tests in the days and weeks to come will determine to what extent it is present here,” he added.
