In 2014, during the conflict in eastern Ukraine, a photo of Irina Dovgan was published in the New York Times. It shows a terrified woman, wrapped in a Ukrainian flag, attached to a lamp post and forced to undergo public beatings.

Tortured by pro-Russian separatist fighters, some of whom reportedly came from Russia, Irina is one of the 1.5 million displaced people currently living in government-controlled territory.

She tells her traumatic story and explains why she believes that a pro-European president would prevent Ukraine from falling into the sphere of Russia's influence.
