Nigel Adkins kept his cards against his chest once his weekly press conference arrived at the inevitable questions of his future as head coach of Hull City.
It was admitted that a new contract had been officially offered this week and an "appreciation" that his 16 months of hard work had been deemed worthy of an extension.
Perhaps most tellingly, however, nothing seems to indicate that we are eager to sign what Vice President Ehab Allam tabled on Tuesday night.
Adkins repeatedly pointed out that he was considering "digesting" the contract proposal and, in the meantime, concentrating all his energy on the match that was airing away from Ipswich Town. "I just want to make sure the team is ready for Saturday's match," he said.

Eight days after meeting with Allam, Adkins had enough leeway to doubt the long-term future of Adkins, who was to develop plans for 2019-2020. The hope within the club is that Adkins could possibly be persuaded to sign an extension, but that did not sound like a formality.
"I now understand better the direction taken by the football club," he said. "It must be digested in the right way. We do not want to do things in public.
"They would like me to stay here next season, which is great. I am very grateful for that.
"From my point of view, I'm going to digest that, but my concentration and my energies are gearing up for this weekend's match."
Adkins at least now has a decision to make. Over the last few months, he has spoken at length about his future and has each time concluded that it would have been necessary for the city to take the lead.
This eventually took place with eight games remaining in the championship season, but this "clearer understanding" of City's focus on the next quarter has clearly left reserves to Adkins.
He knows that the budget will be reduced and that he knows that the key staff will be lost.
This should not disturb Adkins, nor his own financial program.
"It's not just the weekly pay you're going to touch, forget it, I'm going beyond that, it's all the image of what you're trying to achieve."
And it's the knot of everything. Adkins does not hide his desire to manage the Premier League again and asks an employer to do the same.
The financial restrictions the city faces in 2019-2020 are not ignored, but he would like to be proactive and busy if he decided to stay for another season.
Last summer, Adkins was frustrated and infuriated. Too many targets have slipped into the net, City having once again dithered on the transfer market. Like predecessors, such as Leonid Slutsky, Mike Phelan and Steve Bruce, Adkins has learned the hard way that the Allam family rarely rushes to anything that can wait until tomorrow.
Adkins needs badurances and precisions that can only come from the board of directors, but the emotional attachment he would need to break if she decided to refuse this contract offer.

Aged 53, he is more and more comfortable at the KCOM stadium. He has built close ties with his supporters and, little by little, created a culture that he knew before, and was extremely successful at Scunthorpe United and Southampton.
Adkins also spent time looking for a home in the area before potentially starting his future. There is a clear desire to move forward with a southeastern family move.
Keeping Adkins and his trusted badistant, Andy Crosby, does not seem difficult to sell for City in a week. The offer was finally submitted, but it should also not be considered a formality.
If Adkins has focused on the short term, regularly bringing the discussion back to Portman Road, he will always keep an eye on what he might be able to achieve in the long run.
