When we think of Prince William, we think of the future king of England, smiling and easy-going. But could it be that this royal with the beautiful woman and the adorable children is not as beautiful as we think?

That's why some people who have met William in person do not use the best adjectives to describe their personality.

Prince William is described as "controlling" and "unobtrusive"

Some reporters and royal experts explain on what Prince William is really in person and the duke's critics are not good.

The documentary Reinventing the Royals interviewed several correspondents about the first major public engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton in Australia in 2014 and their impressions of William were not great.

Sarrah Le Marquand, columnist for the Daily Telegraph Australia Claisaid that the Duke of Cambridge had a "very impartial" character.

"[He is] not quite the warm and confused character that maybe some people who line up in the street think, "she explained. "Despite all its easy-going facade, Prince William is obviously a very dominant figure."

ITN's Royal Correspondent, Tim Ewart, also revealed details of the visit and claimed that William and Middleton had refused to recognize him.

"These are the first people I know who do not speak to me at all," he said. "More than that, the people who represent them will make me aware of their movements, what I can do and my position, but they will not tell me anything about what these people think."

Other journalists apparently "were not so comfortable" with the couple either.

Reason for the tense relationship

The documentary noted that there may be an underlying reason for William's "ruthless" attitude towards the media and that it may have something to do with his mother, the late Princess Diana.

One of the most complicated relationships of the royals to have is with the press. The family has repeatedly stated that their privacy is invaded too often.

In 1994, Prince Charles was photographed among the buffets during his holidays in France and, a few years later, the paparazzi photographed the Duchess of Cambridge tanning without flinching. But the deepest wounds go back to Princess Diana and the way the press constantly pursued her until her death in 1997. And these days, because of the 24-hour media cycle, there is even more of a family goal that William is very much aware of.

William is still one of the most popular royals

Despite these claims, William remained among the most popular royalties, so much so that a large part of the British public has long been asking the Crown to give way to his father and to visit him directly. In fact, according to an Ipsos MORI survey conducted in 2018, Prince William would have been elected royal by 62%.

With regard to the favorable opinions and impressions of the royals although his brother, Prince Harry, has a slight advantage over him with 87% of the votes, against 83% for William.
