Islamic scholar pleads forcefully to allow underage girls to marry

Hajia Aesha Adams, head of IQRA's educational center, said Ghanaian law should allow the marriage of girls under the age of 18, provided they are physically fit, psychologically and mentally fit.

According to her, most girls under the age of 18 flirt with men anyway, in the name of not having matured in accordance with the laws of Ghana, and end up being pregnant with pregnancy in adolescence.

Speaking on the show "Sonto Show" with host Akua Sonto on Agoo TV, she reiterated that all these problems could be corrected if only our system in Ghana allowed early marriages to work.

"I see these 18 years of admitting that we are mature enough to pose a problem. How can girls under 18 flirt without being able to get married if they are ripe? If our laws in Ghana require the consent of a 16-year-old girl to have an affair with a man, why can not they enforce the law so that girls get married under age, she says.

"The Sonto Show" is a program that concretely addresses the real life, social problems and challenges faced by individuals, especially children and women.

It is broadcast on Agoo TV every Sunday at 17h and rebroadcast on Wednesday at 10am with the host Akua Sonto.
