As part of efforts to deepen its relationship with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the Israeli government inaugurated two neonatal care units in two health facilities in Kumasi Metropolitan Area.
The beneficiary hospitals are Kumasi South and Suntreso hospitals.
Each of the 16 newborn beds would provide essential services such as: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), clinical training for medical badistants and medical badistants, while also serving as research hubs for maternal and child health.
Ms. Shani Cooper, Israeli Ambbadador to Ghana, who inaugurated the facilities at separate ceremonies in Kumasi on Wednesday, said the goal was to improve performance and reduce neonatal and maternal deaths in the mother units -child.
The units were created by an Israeli doctor, Dr. Miki Karplus in 2009 for both hospitals, as part of the joint MASHAV and Soroka initiative.
Up to now, both units have been able to record significant results with the introduction of new methodologies, a computerized data collection system and a marked decrease in the maternal and neonatal mortality rate.
In addition, the units provided permanent remote medical consultations between the team of Israeli doctors and their counterparts in both facilities.
Cooper said the Israeli government has also helped install CPAP air bubble devices, infusion pumps, radiant heaters, oxystems and light therapy equipment in the facilities, all of which are beneficial to delivery. effective neonatal services in institutions.
She mentioned that a delegation from Ghana's health service was already in Israel to attend a conference on health technologies, adding that her government remained committed to partnering with the Government of Ghana to accelerate the process. socio-economic development.
Dr. Ashura Bakari, head of the MBU of the Sunterso government hospital, said the hospital had an annual intake of more than 900 babies aged zero to two months.
He said the number of neonatal deaths had decreased from 23 in 2017 to 16 in 2018 and commended the Israeli government for its continued support for improving neonatal services in both facilities.
