In Israel, the number of new coronavirus infections continues to rise despite the country’s high vaccination rate.

Some 307 people have tested positive the day before, the health ministry said on Thursday.

The last time more than 300 new infections were recorded in one day was in early April.

Most of the new infections are linked to the more aggressive Delta variant of the coronavirus, which was first detected in India. Many of those infected are young people.

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked has said she will re-order the closure of Ben-Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv if new infections continue to rise.

The number of people seriously ill with Covid-19 has increased only slightly to 29. No deaths linked to the virus have been recorded for about a week.

Israel is considered a model country in the fight against the coronavirus due to its successful vaccination campaign.

Out of a population of approximately 9.3 million, 5.6 million people received the first vaccination, of which 5.2 million are fully vaccinated.
