A number of monuments in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, were illuminated in blue and orange on Monday to mark World Cancer Day.

They included the Martyrs' Bridge on July 15, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and the Galata Tower.

World Cancer Day, celebrated each year on February 4, aims to raise public awareness of this deadly disease and encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.

On February 4 each year, the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and other organizations launch public awareness campaigns on cancer and provide information on ways to reduce the risk of development.

Monument lighting in Istanbul was also a support for the UICC cause.

According to cancer.org, the estimated number of cancer deaths in the world in 2018 was 9.5 million, or 26,000 deaths per day.
