The Italian postal service provider, Poste Italiane, has joined the Hyperledger block chain community, Cointelegraph Italia reported on 29 January.
Hyperledger is a collaborative project led by the Linux Foundation that aims to create open source standards for blockchain and distributed distribution (DLT) technology. It includes several industry leaders including American Express, Cisco, Intel, JPMorgan, Deloitte and Huawei.
In a press release, Poste Italiane stated that Hyperledger's membership was consistent with the service's "Deliver 2022" business plan. Part of the plan involves the acquisition and acceleration of new technologies in the agency's operations.
This announcement particularly draws attention to data protection, claiming that blockchain technology is "an effective response to security, transparency, interoperability, and privacy issues."
US mail delivery services giant FedEx joined hyperledger in September 2018. Last week, a committee of the Italian Senate approved an amendment on the blockchain sector regulation, which defines technologies and smart contracts based on the DLT. Following the approval of the Senate's "filter committees", the proposed amendment must now be approved by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic. Once the decree has been promulgated, the technical aspects of the legislation will be overseen by the Italian Digital Agency, which reports to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
