Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and chief whip of the New Patriotic Party said the failure of the ruling party to elect its presidential candidate for Ghana’s 8th parliament is a major setback for the Akufo administration -Addo.

The NPP, in an intense race to elect the speaker of Ghana’s 8th parliament, failed to achieve victory despite the same number of MPs as the opposition National Democratic Congress and the support of an independent MP.

Speaking about the effect of this on government business, Annoh-Dompreh said, “There is no doubt about it. It’s a setback, I respect the Hon. Alban Bagbin, I respect him a lot. But I think in the right context, in the context of what we want to pursue as a government agenda, it’s a setback. No one would want to have someone who is not supportive of your course in that big seat. So it’s a setback, ”he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen monitored by GhanaWeb.

However, in the opinion of the deputy for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, it is necessary that his party does not dwell on the past but is turned towards the future.

“But I’m saying we can’t keep crying over spilled milk, it’s done. What’s done is done so we have to deal with it [with] What we have. Because fortunately, those to whom we speak (the opposition) are a little reasonable and I say a little reasonable with the greatest respect, ”he added.

Ghana, for the first time in its fourth Republican history, has a Speaker of Parliament elected from outside the outgoing party.

Alban Bagbin defeated the Speaker of Ghana’s 7th Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, who was renamed by his party for the presidential race.

This development, according to some experts, is an obstacle to the continuation of the program of the administration headed by Akufo-Addo, given the power exercised by the Speaker of Parliament.

On the other hand, some argue that it balances the system and will ensure the checks and balances required of a democracy.
