The former Partizan player could join the Spanish team as early as this week and become the second player to join the Rojiblancos club based in Lisbon this summer after signing their club record of Joao Felix for a fee of 113 million pounds, reports Marca.
There was no confirmation of fees, but it is believed that the well-rated player is worth about 7 million pounds.
He will replace Nikola Kalinic, who is likely to leave the Spanish capital.
Saponjic should be the fourth choice behind Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa.
The Serb was compared to Mario Mandzukic. Strength, air capacity and prolific finish are his outstanding qualities.
During his period with Benfica B in the Liga Pro, the striker made 68 appearances by finding the net 14 times and providing two badists.

The most impressive signing of Los Rojiblancos, however, must be the arrival of Portuguese prodigy Joao Felix.
The striker has been described as the most exciting Portuguese player since Cristiano Ronaldo.
Felix made his debut for Benfica early in the 2018/19 season. During the campaign, he scored 15 goals and nine badists in the Primeira Liga thanks to the victory of his club.
