Afia Pokua, a Ghanaian media personality, better known as Vim Lady, revealed that she had lost several marriage proposals because of the nature of her work and the controversies that accompany it.
She made the announcement while speaking to an audience at the Alliance of Women in Media's first anniversary conference series.
According to her, the non-functionality of support systems is a contributing factor to existing misconceptions and controversies surrounding women in the Ghanaian media space.
"… There are many misconceptions, so there is a system we have to break to get women there. Once they even find themselves in the media, what are the support systems out there? No."
In her case, however, she noted that breaking down barriers and organizing a political radio show for more than ten years in a local language may seem inspiring, but to her dismay, most of her relationships that could have ended by a marriage did not last the nature of what she did.
"Imagine sitting on the radio, calling fathers of older people, people older than me, because I have a job to do. And I do it to Akan, very brutal, not just brutal in English, but very brutal. I have therefore been called all sorts of names. I've lost marriage proposals because of that. Yes … 'My son can not marry a woman who is noisy, so my son can not be with you. I heard a lot of that. "She told.
Afia Pokuaa pointed out that until the introduction of local languages in the Ghanaian media, most women were deprived of information because of the language barrier.
"Until now, local language television channels have cut out access to information for many women because of the language barrier," she added.
Afia Pokuaa is currently editor-in-chief and host of a political debate on Adom FM, a subsidiary of Multimedia.
The theme of the conference was "Balancing in Information Coverage: The Role of Media Organizations in Reducing Gender Disparities".
