Britain's largest automaker has developed a technology that could help stop the spread of colds and flu. It uses the innovative technology of ultraviolet light (UV-C), used in the medical industry for over 70 years for water disinfection, air filtration and sterilization of surfaces.
Jaguar Land Rover wants to incorporate it into its cars to help prevent harmful bacteria and viruses, called pathogens, from surviving in the car. The Jaguar Land Rover system exposes pathogens to UV-C in the air conditioning system, which helps to send clean air into the cabin.
"The average driver spends an average of 300 hours a year driving," said Dr. Steve Iley, Chief Medical Officer of Jaguar Land Rover. "There is an obvious opportunity to better use cars to administer preventative health care."

Jaguar Land Rover has already started working on pathogen neutralization technology in its latest generation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
The company's current climate control and air ionization system, consisting of four zones, uses high voltage to create trillions of negatively charged nanoscale (ion) particles. and covered with water molecules. They deactivate pathogens and form larger particles that are removed from the air as they are reinserted into the filter. Ions also act in the same way on odor molecules and allergens.

Jaguar Land Rover points out that recent medical studies suggest that the use of UV-C could reduce by 30% the transmission of four major superbugs.
