The Accra District Court sentenced a guard and a taxi driver to 17 months in prison for helping seven inmates escape from the Kwabenya Police Station cell January 21, 2018.

Nancy Dantaa, the concierge, and Kofi Seshie, the taxi driver, were found guilty of escaping legal custody.

It was discovered that Dantaa was a close friend of one of the detainees and helped him by charging his phone.

This was the phone that the inmate used to plan his daring escape.

The court, chaired by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, also sentenced Prince Osei, one of the escapees, to 40 months in prison for illegal possession of ammunition.

Osei is already serving 36 months in prison for escaping illegally from the police cell.

The court also sentenced Prince Kofi Acheampong to 40 months in jail for giving ammunition to Osei.

Cell-break

On 21 January 2018, seven inmates from the Kwabenya Police Station cell escaped from prison following a cell break by six armed men.

The breakup of the cell resulted in the death of a police officer, Inspector Emmanuel Ashilevi.

The police were able to arrest four of the escapees and nine people who would have helped their escape, but three of the escapees – Chibuzor Akwubu, Rockson Edem Dzigbede and Dickson Ofori – are still on the run.

The prosecution told the court that before the operation, two gang members had investigated the police station by voluntarily going to the scene to file a complaint.

They complained of having borrowed money and refused to pay, which a police officer ordered them to bring to the civil court.

"At that time, the two men signaled to the others who had ambushed an attack on the office of the charge. They fired at Inspector Ashilevi, who was on duty.

"They took the cell keys and released seven of the detainees, namely Prince Osei, Atta Kwadwo, Chibuzor Akwubu, Emmanuel Kotey, Darko Kofi, Edem Dzigbede Rockson and Dickson Ofori," said the prosecutor.
