Jamie Redknapp feared the worst when his beloved father, Harry, was involved in a road accident that killed four people almost 30 years ago.

The former Liverpool player was 16 when he was told the terrible news from Italy.

The smash, which cost the life of former West Ham player, Brian Tiller, and three Italians in 1990, still haunts the winner of I'm Celebrity.

The family opened up about the accident on Piers Morgan's life story.

Harry, 72, was left in a coma – and his teenage son, Jamie, fainted. He was then put in tears when the reality of the situation came to an end.

"He was in a coma for a few days," said the football specialist, who played Soccer Aid Sunday.

Harry spoke to Piers Morgan – not just his fantastic year

"I did not like to see him in this situation, it was difficult.

"We were so proud to receive him again, but he was not able to cope for a while.

"It was a difficult time, which few people have understood, I think.

"He did not even tell us about it – he was one of his best friends, it was awful."

Jamie and Harry almost 20 years ago

Harry remembered the day that almost cost him his life with his friend taking a seat in the bus.

The king of the jungle said, "We were about to get on the bus and stopped to talk to Irish fans." Brian said, "Come on, Harry, you have to go. "

"I kept talking.I often told myself that if I had not kept talking and I got on the bus when they called me.

"It was a horrible tragedy for me to lose him and the three young kids from the other car."

Harry's wife, Sandra, also talked about the impact on the young Jamie at the time.

"When Jamie saw it, he fainted," she said.
