Chelsea struggle to find takers for Marcos Alonso

According to The Athletic (h / t Football.london), Chelsea have yet to receive an offer for disgraced defender Marcos Alonso.

The 30-year-old is a peripheral player at Stamford Bridge and is the club’s third left-back behind Ben Chilwell and Emerson Palmieri. Alonso’s downfall came after his disagreement with Frank Lampard at the Hawthorns earlier this season.

He hasn’t played since and his prospects at the club appear precarious at best. Chelsea, for their part, are keen to offload the player permanently.

Alonso still has three years on his current contract. The player hasn’t made life easy at Bridge either.

He courted unnecessary controversy by liking an Instagram post which attributed it to a loss for Chelsea. It wouldn’t have done much to gain the liking of officials.

The Spaniard caught the attention of European heavyweights Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid. However, both sides are keen on a loan deal, which the Blues do not prefer.

Alonso has registered 22 goals and 17 assists in 152 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions. A goal contribution once every 3.9 games is nothing to disapprove of, especially for a full-back.

A move to Inter would have seen him reunite with Antonio Conte. The Italian used the defender in a 3-4-3 which made better use of his offensive traits.

Lampard, meanwhile, prefers to play four at the back, forcing Alonso to be vigilant defensively. If anything, it helped to point out the shortcomings in his game at the back.

The defender appears to have no future at Chelsea. The Blues believe they can get £ 20million for the player’s services. At this time, we have not been able to find a buyer who accepts the price.

Alonso still has a number of years in him. A separation of paths could help him resuscitate his career elsewhere.
