Jan Siewert was confirmed as Huddersfield's new boss after learning that his long-term future was not dependent on perseverance.
The Terriers returned to Borussia Dortmund for coach Siewert, as they had done when they named David Wagner of the Bundesliga club in 2015.
Avoiding the dropping is an almost impossible task this quarter, so Siewert was told that he would be given more time than this season to straighten the team.
Huddersfield will pay Dortmund about £ 265,000 in compensation for the German, whose first match will be against Everton.
Under-23 coach Mark Hudson led the team for the 3-0 defeat on Sunday in Manchester City.
"I was asked to take over the team this week before Sunday," Hudson said.
"I thanked all the players for what they gave me."
