The average change in price levels of consumer goods and services, as measured by inflation, fell to its lowest level in six years, reported the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The January 2019 rate is the lowest after the 8.8% recorded in January 2013.
David Kombat, acting government statistician, GSS, said that a combined pressure of both the food and non-food inflationary basket contributed to the rate cut in January 2019.
The food inflation rate in January 2019 was 8.0%, compared to 8.7% in December 2018.
The non-food inflation rate in January 2019 was 9.5%, compared with 9.8% in December 2018.
The main "price drivers" of the non-food inflation rate were transportation (13.4%), clothing and footwear (12.8%), recreation and culture (12.7%), furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (11.2%). ) and miscellaneous goods and services (9.6%).
On the other hand, the prices of the food inflation rate were coffee, tea and cocoa (12.4%), fruits (10.0%), meat and meat products (9, 8%) and mineral water, non-alcoholic drinks, fruit and vegetable juices (9.3%).
Kombat said the 9.5 percent non-food inflation rate was 1.5 percentage points higher than 8.0 percent.
The inflation rate for imported items was 10.8% in January 2019, compared to 11.1% in December 2018, while the inflation rate for locally manufactured products was 8.3%. in January 2019, compared to 8.7% in December 2018.
At the regional level, four regions – Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Western and Ashanti – recorded inflation rates above the national average of 9.0%.
