Premier League clubs spent £ 180 million during the January transfer period. This is the first time this figure has dropped since 2012, according to football finance experts at Deloitte. Nearly a third of total spending was funded by Chelsea's expenses for Christian Pulisic of Borussia Dortmund.

Last year, during the winter transfer, the best air clubs paid 430 million pounds, including Virgil van Dijk (75 million) and Aymeric Laporte (50 million). However, most of Jan's major deals saw players leave the Premier League teams, Brahim Diaz moving from Manchester City to Real Madrid for £ 15.5m, Mousa Dembele moving from Tottenham to Guangzhou R & F for 11 £ million Rabbi Matondo of Manchester City.

Tim Bridge, director of Deloitte's Sports Business Group, said: "As the decisive phase of the season approaches, January transfer spending by Premier League clubs has been relatively low compared to previous years. "

January's expenses rose to £ 225m in 2011 but dropped to £ 60m the following year. It doubled the following year and remained stable at £ 130m in 2014 and 2015 before climbing to £ 175m, £ 215m and £ 430m over the last three seasons. The £ 180 million transfer bill means that the total gross expenditure of the Premier League clubs for the 2018-19 season is estimated at £ 1.4 billion.

Deloitte's other findings include the "Big Six", which accounted for 43% of January's expenses, down from last January's 62%.

Similarly, those who were in the last six of the table spent 20 million euros – against 70 million in the same period last season. Deloitte added that the championship clubs have spent £ 60m, more than double the total of £ 30m last year.
