Dr Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah, better known historically as JB Danquah, was a historic Ghanaian politician who died on February 4, 1965.
The Ghanaianmuseum reports that the politician died at Nsawam Prison after being arrested and detained on January 8, 1964, after allegedly being involved in a conspiracy against the President, Kwame Nkrumah.
As myjoyonline.com recalls, after losing a presidential contest against Dr Kwame Nkrumah in April 1960, Dr John Boakye Danquah was suspected of having intended to overthrow the People’s Convention Party (PPC) government.
Joseph Boakye Danquah was a renowned founding member of the UGCC and a member of the Big Six along with Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey and William Ofori Atta.
After the subversion of the CPP government in February 1966 by the National Liberation Council (NLC), JB Danquah received a state funeral and his status was rehabilitated.
Later, the Danquah Circle Roundabout, a key intersection in Accra’s arterial road network was named after the Pan-Africanist, scholar, lawyer and historian. He died at age 69.
Meanwhile, before, during and after his funeral which took place at Black Star Square on Wednesday January 27, 2020, many world leaders praised the renowned former president of Ghana.
