OTTAWA, April 10, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – JDRF is very pleased with the 11 recommendations made today by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health in its report: A Canadian Diabetes Strategy, in accordance with the recommendations of the organization included in their 2019 Pre-Budget Submission. JDRF urges the government to adopt all of the recommendations in today's report as soon as possible.

Patrick Tohill, JDRF Director of Government Relations, appeared before the Committee in May and October 2018 to make recommendations on how the federal government can improve the lives of Canadians with type 1 diabetes. pleased to note that a number of our recommendations have now been approved by the House of Commons Health Committee, including:
- Developing a National Diabetes Strategy
- The creation of a national diabetes registry
- Troubleshoot accessibility issues with the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) by:
- Recognize the time spent preparing meals, adjust the intake of a proper diet prescribed by a physician, or calculate the formulas needed to manage diabetes within the time required to qualify for the DTC and
- Reduce the number of hours devoted to weekly therapy-related activities for an individual to be eligible for the DTC
- Identify ways to cope with the high prices of long-acting insulin in Canada and
- Continued funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for research into the prevention and treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
JDRF was also very pleased to see the Committee recommending that the Government of Canada hold discussions with the provinces and territories to explore possible approaches to provide consistent coverage for diabetes medications, supplies and equipment in Canada. all of Canada.
