Jeep Wrangler vs. Jeep Gladiator – Differences and comparisons

[ad_1]

The long-awaited arrival of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator raises an obvious question: how is this different from the Jeep Wrangler we already know? We already have a four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 2018 in our long-term test fleet, which we were able to test against the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon 2020 that we recently got hold of. They matched so well – even in the colors – that we could immediately identify and explain their differences.

The Gladiator is actually a Jeep pickup truck, but it's much more than a Jeep Wrangler with a cut-off back and a welded van body. This side-by-side comparison of the Jeep shows that the two are virtually identical from the rear doors to the front. But the frame under the Gladiator is both longer and stronger and its rear suspension is similar to the coil spring suspension found in a Ram 1500 pickup.

Above, stands a legitimate 5-foot truck crate that is as capable as any other medium-sized pickup, and our Gladiator Rubicon can tow 7,000 pounds – double what it's worth. a Wrangler Rubicon can shoot. Yes, the longer wheelbase of the Gladiator worsens its tilt and departure angles compared to a Wrangler Unlimited. But the Rubicon undercarriage that they both share still gives the Jeep truck impressive off-road capabilities over competing off-road trucks. So, yes, a Wrangler is better off-road, but the practical difference is not as big as you think. This could be the solution if you are one of those people who have always wanted a Wrangler but never did it because you needed a truck.

About the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler does not need to be introduced as this iconic vehicle is the very heart of the Jeep brand. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler represents a complete overhaul and is by far the best example that Jeep has ever given. The impressive 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is back and a new, 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder engine offers better average performance, more torque and better overall high-altitude performance. A six-speed manual gearbox with a revised gearshift mechanism is standard, and a new eight-speed automatic that we like a bit replaces a little unloved five-speed automatic transmission of the latest model.

As before, the chbadis is a traditional ladder frame with solid front axles and coil springs at each end. This year, the safety cage is more easily integrated into the body, improving the function of the removable doors and the folding windshield. But the improved interior represents perhaps the most striking difference, with its superior materials, its improved switching facilities and its high degree of infotainment technology. As before, the Wrangler is available in Sport, Sport S, Sahara and Rubicon all-terrain versions, and you have a choice of two or four doors.

About the 2020 Jeep Gladiator

The new Gladiator could be the ideal vehicle for those who want a Jeep but need a truck. It benefits from Wrangler's well-sorted V6 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission combination. It offers the same impressive and easy-to-use interior as the latest Wrangler. And its pickup references are real: the Sport S can tow 7,650 pounds and has a payload of 1,600 pounds, but even the Rubicon can tow 7,000 pounds.

Yes, the driving experience suffers a bit from Jeepy's very solid front axle, but a soft-suspension coil spring rear suspension compensates for this disaster. And it is true that the gladiator's wheelbase is a bit long compared to other Crew Cab vans. It's a mixed bag because it smooths the ride and follows it more straight on the road, but it also reduces the clearance for overturning and makes it more likely to drag on the belly. This aspect is significant if you compare it to a Wrangler, but it's less so compared to other medium-sized trucks.
