Second-day match specialist Jermaine Jenas blamed the Chelsea midfielder for not supporting Gonzalo Higuain as one of the key factors in his 6-0 loss to Manchester City.
The Argentinian was one of the rare members of Maurizio Sarri's team to shine in a match in which the defending Premier League champions dominated their opponents.
It was obvious that the visitors were hoping to catch up with the home team by pressing up the pitch, but according to former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, his players were engaged in the game plan, which has left insulated central insulation.
Jenas joined Alan Sheaerer to badyze why Chelsea was struggling to put pressure on his opponents in the opposing half to allow City to build moves and strike with ruthless efficiency from the other side.
"Chelsea did not deal with City," he said. "Sarri went to Etihad to put pressure and that did not happen.
"There are a few things you need to do, you need a live that you're going to support in. You need intensity, you need a few triggers."
He chose Higuain and his job out of the ball but wondered if the attacker and his teammates had received the correct instructions.
"It starts with Gonzalo Higuain, but where does he press?" asked Jenas. "While the ball is easily played around the defense, where does he press or is he told to press?"
"He should press John Stones as he takes this ball from one angle to the other to keep it away from that goal, not allowing him to send that ball to Ederson. "
"Pretty good, the ball is coming back to Ederson, but Higuain should sprint him, go to Ederson.
"Put him under pressure, get him now to Laporte and I want Kante to press him, Barkley urging him, if we have to press, let's do it right, but that did not happen. nice easy ball, they move it around. "
Shearer defended Argentina, whose efforts at the front were undermined by the lack of support from other team members.
"He must be seconded by the players behind him," said former Newcastle United striker. "It's probably why he looked so frustrated because they're not doing it.
"For a good part of this game, today, it was not convincing, we go either as a team or as a team because we know that City is so good that we will take you.
Jenas agreed and added, "If you look [Eden] Hazard, Barkley, Kante, they do not really give him any direction, and that was a constant in the game. In the first 30 minutes, it was as easy as they had against a team.
"This team does not react to what it wants to do."
