Wondering why your iPhone 3G did not get background wallpapers? Erica, a reader of Gizmodo, sent a message to Steve Jobs asking for an explanation.
Jobs Answer? The backgrounds of 3G simply did not meet their performance standards. But there is a little more here.
Erica's mail to Jobs reads as follows:
Hey Steve! I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4 and I was really looking forward to setting a background on my home screen. I guess that does not happen, but I would like to know why.
You see, I understand why you do not include multitasking. My iPhone gets very hot when some apps work, I can not imagine how multitasking would fry my phone.
But the background, I do not see how it would require a lot of memory and / or battery. It does not seem that this feature should be exclusive to 3GS and 4G.
Jobs:
The animation of icons with backgrounds did not go smoothly enough.
This explanation probably has no meaning for iPhone and iPod Touch users who have wallpapers in the background on their jailbroken devices for years thanks to Winterboard. It is clear that even the first-generation iPhone has the power to run a wallpaper without significantly affecting performance.
The difference here, however, is in execution. Noting that some screen background images can make it difficult to view icon text and even icon applications, Apple has chosen to place a drop shadow for each icon and label … what Winterboard does not. From where the extra charges.
Frankly, if you have an iPhone 3G or an iPod Touch 2G, I would not be too excited about Apple's omission here: a functional jailbreak for iOS 4 is fast approaching, and Winterboard should be just as good bring screen funds to legacy legacy devices as it has always done.
