Joe Biden was sworn in as President of the United States, following his election victory over Donald Trump last year.

Here are some of the global responses to Wednesday’s transfer of power in Washington, DC. This list will be updated as reactions from leaders around the world increase.

Japan

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga tweeted his congratulations to the new president and his vice president Kamala Harris in English and Japanese.

“Japan and the United States are allies firmly bound by bonds and shared universal values,” Suga wrote. “I look forward to working with you and your team to strengthen our alliance and achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

United Kingdom

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he looks forward to working with the new president.

“I can’t wait to work with him [Biden], and with his new administration, strengthen the partnership between our countries and work on our common priorities, to fight climate change, to rebuild better after the pandemic and to strengthen our transatlantic security, ”said Johnson.

Qatar

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani sent a congratulatory cable to Biden on the occasion of Biden’s swearing-in, wishing him success in his office and promising friendship and strategic cooperation between the two countries in their development and growth.

Germany

In a video statement, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that taking the helm from Biden marked a “good day for democracy.”

“In the United States of America, it [democracy] faced enormous challenges – and endured. Despite attempts to tear apart the institutional fabric of America, election officials and governors, the judiciary and Congress have proven to be strong, ”he said.

European Union

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said the United States was “back”.

“Europe is ready. To reconnect with a former trusted partner, ”she wrote on Twitter.

Pakistan

Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Twitter that he hoped to work with newly elected Biden “to build a stronger Pakistan-American partnership.”

Italy

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said he was “looking forward” to working with Biden’s presidency.

“We have a strong common agenda, ranging from the effective multilateralism that we both want to see, to climate change, green and digital transition and social inclusion,” Conte said.

China

Local and state Chinese media Xinhua wrote an op-ed hailing the end of Trump’s tenure, saying “good riddance to the current US administration and its final insanity.”

Vatican

Pope Francis told Biden that he prayed that God would guide his efforts to bring about reconciliation in the United States and among the nations of the world.

In a message sent shortly after the second U.S. Catholic President was sworn in, Francis also said he hoped Biden would work for a society marked by true justice, freedom, and respect for the rights and dignity of every person, especially the poor, the vulnerable and those with no voice.

Iran

President Hassan Rouhani hailed the departure of “tyrant” Trump, who in 2018 reimposed punitive sanctions against Iran following Washington’s unilateral decision to withdraw from a landmark nuclear deal signed between Tehran and the powers worldwide in 2015.

“The era of a tyrant has come to an end and today is the last day of his disturbing reign,” said Rouhani.

“We are waiting [the Biden administration] get back to the law and commitments, and try over the next four years, if they can, to remove the stains from the past four years.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh called for action and “not just words” shortly after Biden was sworn in.

“The world knows that only the United States can fix itself – in practice; not just words, ”Khatibzadeh said in a Twitter post.

Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and said he was “looking forward to continuing this partnership”.

NATO

NATO has said it hopes to strengthen transatlantic relations under Biden.

“We look forward to working with President-elect Joe Biden to further strengthen the ties between the United States and Europe, as we face global challenges that neither of us can tackle alone,” wrote the military alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg on Twitter.

Russia

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia will seek “good relations with the United States”, but whether or not the United States works towards the same goal “will depend on Mr. Biden and his team”.

Peskov said President Vladimir Putin had “systematically” called for the preservation of a historic nuclear weapons treaty and that it was now up to Washington to preserve the pact.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the decision of new US President Joe Biden to return to the Paris climate agreement, saying “welcome back” in a congratulatory message after his inauguration.

“Best wishes on this very important day for the American people!” Macron tweeted in English.

“We are together. We will be stronger to face the challenges of our time. Stronger to build our future. Stronger to protect our planet. Welcome back to the Paris Agreement!”

French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said Biden’s pledges to join the World Health Organization (WHO) – which is leading the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic – and the Treaty of Paris on the climate are “extremely important” after Trump’s withdrawal.

“We look forward to building a strong, useful and renewed relationship with President Biden,” Attal said after a cabinet meeting. “We have colossal goals and challenges to tackle together.”

India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Biden and said on Twitter that the United States and India “are united and resilient to address common challenges and advance global peace and security.”

Palestine

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said: “There are no regrets about Trump leaving, as he has been the greatest source and sponsor of injustice, violence and extremism in the world and the direct partner of the Israeli occupation in aggression against our people. “

“US President Joe Biden must turn the tide of misguided and unjust policies against our people and lay the foundation for security and stability in the region.”

Belarus

“Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris! Best wishes in your work on behalf of all of the United States. Looking forward to working with you to develop Belarus-USA relations! Exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya said on Twitter.

Spain

Spokesman for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said: “Biden’s victory represents the victory of democracy over the far right.

“Five years ago, we believed without [a] doubts Trump is a bad joke. Five years later, we realize he has endangered the most powerful democracy in the world.

Greece

The Greek prime minister said he plans to further strengthen ties between Greece and the United States with “a renewed sense of optimism”.

Mexico

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he shares Joe Biden’s political priorities and wishes him every success ahead of his inauguration.

“I agree with his three main approaches… [tackling the] pandemic, economic reactivation and migration. And of course, wishing that President Biden would do very well in his administration, ”he told reporters.

Portugal

Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Twitter that his administration was ready to work with Biden from “day one”.

Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Biden to “strengthen” a long-standing alliance between the two countries, in part to deal with the “threat” posed by Iran.

“I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the US-Israel alliance, to continue to expand peace between Israel and the Arab world, and to address common challenges, chief among which is the threat posed by Iran.” Netanyahu said in a video congratulating Biden.
