"My audition for Gendry is the worst I've ever done."

Game of thrones Star Joe Dempsie revealed how he tried to get Jon Snow's role before his "worst audition of all time" earned him the role of Gendry.

The British actor was speaking Sunday at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival in London, just hours before the HBO giant's return for his eighth and final season.

Describing his attempt to film the role, which was eventually awarded to Kit Harington, Joe said, "I finally auditioned for Jon Snow, just about every age-old actor participated. Eighteen months later, I auditioned for Pip and another friend of Jon at the wall. "

"My audition for Gendry is the worst I've ever done, after every scene there was a silence and they said they feared nobody would understand me."

While Harington was finally chosen for the now iconic role, Dempsie quickly became a fan favorite as Gendry.

And while Gendry has only reappeared in Season Seven after a four-year absence, Joe says his return has never been in doubt.

"At the end of the third season, when they announced that Gendry was going to disappear for a while, they said the plan was to come back," he said. "So, I've always had this in the back of my mind. They wanted to leave long enough for people to start forgetting. His return was a surprise.

"In a way, I think Twitter has gotten my job back, they wanted fans to forget about Gendry but they underestimated them."

He added, "The more a loose end is left unattached, the more obvious it becomes rather than erase memory."

Gendry came back again last night in the first episode of the last season of Game of Thrones. In the same episode, viewers learned of the appalling fate of the character played by Ed Sheeran in a brief overview of 2017.
