Johanna Konta failed in her attempt to reach the semifinals of Wimbledon after a series of defeats in the loss to Czech Barbora Strycova.
The British number one started in strength, taking a 4-1 lead, before collapsing to lose 7-6 (7-5) 6-1.
Abandoned by her previously dominant service, Konta could not find a way back because, as in the semifinals of the French Open of June, she collapsed when the first day of the year was over. waiting was great.
"I did my best, and my best today was not good enough," said Konta, 28.
"Every decision I've made, every thought process, every opportunity I've given myself, I have no regrets to do it."
Strycova, who reached her first half in the Grand Slam singles just days after declaring it could be her last Wimbledon, will face 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams.
"I think it's one of the best games I've played," said the 33-year-old.
The game of Konta the deserted
Konta arrived in the match, boasting that he had beaten three of his 47 service matches in these championships.
Despite the fact that she had an early break, the warning signs of her most powerful weapon might not work properly were present in the opening match, while she had to save a break point.
The mistakes began to seep to 4-2 when she sent two strikes back and back savage to allow Strycova to recover the break.
It became a theme as Konta produced 22 non-forced mistakes in the first set, as the Czech increased her confidence as she gave Konta a lesson in lost throws efficiency.
Konta could not find a rhythm, sending a forehand in order to give the set to the world number 54.
Konta has the habit of losing opening sets and winning a third place – with a record of 13 wins for 15 triples this year – but this time a break at the start of the second put a back out of reach.
The game was ready for the British when she had a setback – summing up all that was wrong with this performance.
"I could not find the level I needed to make it difficult and challenging for the kind of player that she is," said Konta, who lost to Strycova in 2017 in Tokyo at their FIFA World Cup. only other meeting.
"She's a very difficult player to play on this surface, and in general, she's a very good player, and it's a pity I did not find the level I needed to get through."
The favorite tag seems to annoy Konta again
Konta hoped to emulate her 2017 feat by reaching the final four and getting closer to the first British finalist in women's singles since Virginia Wade won the title in 1977.
She had a successful year in reaching the semi-finals of the French Open and two WTA finals on clay, before transferring her beautiful form to turf.
Her service was the key, but against Strycova, she only won 51% of her first serve points.
In the previous two rounds, she beat 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens and two-time Wimbledon champion in three sets with accomplished performances, but against the unsettled Strycova – where the Briton was now favorite – his game has collapsed.
His mental strength has often been questioned and it will be again, with this defeat echoing his defeat in the semifinals of Roland Garros against another unseeded Czech, Marketa Vondrousova.
Konta, who was looking to qualify for a fourth Grand Slam semifinal, denied that the wait was up to expectations and refused to blame the fatigue of the first three-set matches.
"I was obviously nervous before the match, but good nerves, excitement, anticipation," she said. "I would not say it has anything to do with the level at which I played or with any difficulty.
"I think it was both not to find my level and not give myself the opportunity to find my level more than anything."
Analysis
BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller
It was an intelligent, skillful and tactically clever performance by Barbora Strycova. At 33, she took the opportunity to qualify beautifully for a first Grand Slam semifinal.
Johanna Konta, however, was unable to play with anything like the freedom of previous rounds.
Thirty-four non-forced errors in two sets tell their own story: Strycova's tricks and lack of relative pace have destabilized him, but nerves and expectations also seemed to play a role.
Konta played brilliantly to win her other quarter-final at Wimbledon against Simona Halep two years ago, as well as her recent quarter-final of the French Open with Sloane Stephens.
But just like in her semifinal at Roland Garros with Marketa Vondrousova, Konta was the favorite here – and unable to play at the level she is capable of.
